‘BACKSTAGE PASS’ – Theme Means FUN at Camp CenterStage!

Enrollment Deadline Approaching

                Camp CenterStage, Angelina Arts Alliance’s popular theater camp for young people, is currently enrolling children for camps starting in June 2013. Kids entering grades 1-11 are eligible to join a camp which “…aims to inspire creativity, stretch imaginations, expand artistic potential, and enhance self-esteem,” stated camp administrator Tracy Pinkerton. Scholarships are available for all camps, as well as discounts for families enrolling more than one child. Enrollment forms are available at the Temple Theater box office, or for printing, online at, under the education tab. Stop by the box office in-person to complete enrollment Monday – Friday through May 31st from 9am -5pm, and Saturday May 11 from noon to 4 pm.

Camp Director Teresa Ragland has been working hard to bring the best theater teachers in Texas to the camp. “An AWESOME faculty awaits campers this year” Teresa stated. Coming to Junior camp, Lindsey Ervi from Leander, Texas, was awarded the Texas Educational Theater Association’s 2011 Educator of the Year award for Grades K-8, and Angela Duncan, a former AC Theater student and current Kindergarten teacher at Huntington Elementary, was Teacher of the year for Huntington Elementary 2012-2013. Both will be teaching Creative Storytelling and Movement. Activities include theatre games, story dramatization and music with a family share day on June 14th.

Camp CenterStage, or the middle camp will learn about; improvisation, the art of Melodrama, complete with boos and hisses, the art of making props and wigs, and Movement and Stage Combat. CCS faculty includes Betsy Baldwin Sunstrom, middle school theater teacher in Round Rock Texas, Denise Larson, teaches theater at Lamar Middle School in Temple Texas, Darla Jones, directs and teaches theater at Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts, Brandon Nichols, choir teacher at Lufkin Middle School, and Rhonda Burnette, theater department assistant at Lufkin Middle School. On Friday, June 28th families and friends are invited to see what the campers have learned during ‘Share Day’. 

MJ Alexander, the theater director at LBJ High School in Austin, returns to Camp CenterStage as Academy Director. Rounding out the Academy faculty will be David Fleming, teaching Tech Track, Mark Keith, the Head Theater Director at Lufkin High School, Phillip Taylor, theater teacher, director, and UIL Academic Coordinator for Rogers ISD and Jay Martin, Choir Director at Murchison Middle School, Austin Texas. The Academy campers will focus on Vocal Dynamics, Acting, Technical Theater and more, culminating in two plays and a musical review presented live on the Temple Theater stage, Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 am. The shows are free to attend and the academy campers invite friends, family, and the public to come see what they have learned.

Teresa Ragland, Camp Director, is a graduate of SFASU, with her MA in Theater Education from U of H. She teaches theater at Lufkin Middle School. She’s an advisory director for the Cherokee Civic Theater in Rusk, and a board member for the newly forming Angelina Community Theater. This is Teresa’s 10th year at CCS.  “Camp CenterStage is all about encouraging kids to learn theater skills in a fun and supportive atmosphere, with the guidance of an experienced professional theater faculty”, says camp administrator, Tracy Pinkerton. “Now, in our 11th year of camp, we are beginning to see our alumni campers, accepting scholarships to pursue performing arts studies, at various institutions around the country, and there is nothing more exciting than that!”
