ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL Rolls into Lufkin Nov. 22
Limited $20 RUSH Tickets at the Door
LUFKIN, TX. ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL has seen miles and miles of Texas. They got their kicks on Route 66. And, in 2010, the band clicked another milestone on the odometer – their 40th anniversary. Now in their 44th year, the band continues to introduce the western swing genre to a new generation on tour and takes audiences on the ride of a lifetime. It’s hard to believe that the Wheel has been making great Western Swing music for over four decades –and on Saturday, November 22nd at 7:30 pm, the Lufkin audience will travel like the speed of light through the years with this set of talented music-makers as the giant video screen tells their story. The documentary film “Then and Now” opens the evening with its time-capsule look at the long-haired youth that made up the band in the early ’70s. Then founding member Ray Benson and the current members of the Wheel take the stage to demonstrate why they’ve earned the nickname of “the official band of Texas.” “This show is a sell-out,” stated Kristie Bailey Box office manager, “And, when that happens we are able to offer a limited number of tickets for the reduced price of $20.” She explained that tickets are often returned at the last minute by patrons that have some sort of emergency—a change of plans, illness, etc. – which prevents them from attending. Rather than those seats go un-used, theaters coined the label ‘RUSH tickets’ for those empty seats that at the last minute lucky patrons ‘rushed’ to claim. Presented by the Angelina Arts Alliance, ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL is sponsored by Goodwin-Lasiter-Strong and J.E. Kingham Construction Co. Tickets range from $32-$40 (Premium/Box $45). 2014-2015 Season sponsors are First Bank and Trust East Texas and Georgia Pacific. College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, joins music.
It all started when Ray Benson, Floyd Domino, and Lucky Oceans, along with a Vermont farm boy named Leroy Preston; Virginian Chris O’Connell; and Gene Dobkin, a bass player and fellow classmate of Benson’s from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, joined forces. They began with a simple goal: to play and help revive American roots music. The musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. Reuter’s pegged The Wheel as “one of the best live acts in the business.” Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book, the band has constantly toured at a national level throughout its history. It’s been an amazing ride. From Paw Paw to San Francisco to Austin, we’ve seen it all,” says Wheel front man Ray Benson. “But, rest assured, there is still so many exciting projects in the works. The Wheel keeps rolling!”
